The smartphone market in Russia saw a decline of 7% year on year in 2021. According to the reports of Counterpoint Research, the modest decline was mainly due to the slower upgrade cycles for consumers that were using mid to high-end devices. The research firm also points out that the trend is likely to continue in 2022, but this time due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
“The current war has changed the entire landscape and pushed the handset market into uncertainty. The fall in ruble will lead to a steep price rise in the short term due to limited inventory and suspended deliveries. Also, as sanctions gather pace, it will be hard for OEMs to make a conclusive device strategy.” - Tarun Pathak, Research Director

Although the Russian smartphone market saw a decline in 2021, it saw a 10% rise in Q4 2021. Samsung was the leading vendor in the country with a 30% market share. The Korean tech giant was followed by Xiaomi and Apple with 23% and 13% market share, respectively.
Chinese smartphone companies covered 44% of the total market in 2021. Brands like Xiaomi, Honor, and Realme are slowly increasing their share in the Russian market.
As mentioned before, the Russian smartphone market is likely to fall in 2022 because of the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Many tech companies have already taken a stand against the invasion of Ukraine. American tech powerhouse, Apple, has even paused the sales of its products from its official website in Russia.
