Nepal’s Most Elevated EV Charging Point Unveiled in Tsarang by Omoda & Jaecoo

At over 3,500 meters above sea level, Tsarang in Upper Mustang is now home to a remarkable milestone in Nepal’s electric mobility evolution. Omoda & Jaecoo, in partnership with SPG Automobiles, have inaugurated the country’s highest-altitude EV charging station, an infrastructure first that promises to open up one of Nepal’s most scenic and remote regions to sustainable travel.

For years, the rugged and spiritual terrain of Upper Mustang has fascinated adventurers, conservationists, and domestic tourists alike. Yet until now, EV travelers faced a hard stop at Jomsom, the last reliable point for charging before heading deeper into Mustang or towards the Korala border. That barrier is now broken.

The Vision Behind the Installation

The new charging station was officially inaugurated by Mr. Lopsang Chomfel Bista, Chairperson of Damodarkunda Rural Municipality, in a ceremony attended by local officials and representatives of SPG Automobiles.

Krishna Pokharel, General Manager of Service and After Sales at SPG Automobiles, shared insights into the technical and infrastructural hurdles they faced in bringing this idea to life. “Since the Nepal Electricity Authority has not yet extended a 33 kV transmission line to Tsarang, we’ve installed a basic charging unit as an interim solution,” he said. “This was only made possible after meaningful consultations with local stakeholders.”

The current charging setup may not yet be high-voltage or fast-charging grade, but its presence is symbolic, and strategic. It paves the way for future expansion and signals strong intent: that EV infrastructure in Nepal must go beyond city limits and cater to real-world adventure use cases.

Unlocking Upper Mustang for EV Adventurers

In practical terms, this charging point solves a major logistical problem for anyone attempting long-distance EV travel in the Mustang–Jomsom–Korala corridor. Previously, drivers of electric SUVs or crossovers had no option but to leave their vehicles behind in Jomsom and switch to petrol-powered alternatives. With the new station in Tsarang, that reality begins to shift.

It’s not just about convenience. It’s about access. About enabling a whole new class of clean, zero-emission explorers to traverse one of the most stunning and culturally rich regions of Nepal, without compromising their vehicle’s energy source.

This move aligns perfectly with the mission of Omoda & Jaecoo, two brands that have been redefining the premium EV and crossover space globally and now in Nepal. Their vehicles are not only equipped with cutting-edge design and range capabilities but are now also backed by a slowly but surely growing charging ecosystem.

Environmental & Local Impact

Beyond mobility, this initiative is a bold step toward environmental consciousness. Upper Mustang, being a sensitive and semi-arid plateau with a fragile ecology, stands to benefit greatly from reduced fossil fuel dependency.

By promoting electric vehicles in such regions, SPG Automobiles and Omoda & Jaecoo are not just pushing products, they’re participating in preserving landscapes. Fewer diesel fumes and fewer oil drums hauled across the Himalayas translate into tangible ecological benefits over time.

Moreover, the project has sparked local employment opportunities. The charging station, though simple for now, requires upkeep, customer service, and technical management. In areas like Tsarang, even one such investment can have a ripple effect in boosting the local economy and skill development.

Conclusion

The Tsarang installation should be seen as the first of many steps. With major EV players like Omoda & Jaecoo actively expanding into off-grid and rural regions, there’s a real possibility that Nepal could build a unique, altitude-tested electric mobility model, something very few countries in the world can claim.

For now, this is a foundational moment. A demonstration that the future of transport in Nepal doesn’t have to be confined to the flatlands or city centers. With the right partnerships, smart local engagement, and a commitment to long-term sustainability, even the most elevated routes can be electrified.

The road ahead may be steep, but Nepal has just proven that elevation is no barrier when ambition meets action.
