Government asserts wearing of Helmets mandatory for pillion rider in Nepal

Most of us may be already acknowledged about these new rules on Road Safety as the number of road accidents in Nepal has been increasing at a swift pace.

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has recently decided to make it mandatory for wearing of helmets to the pillion riders. DoTM has already sent the amendment bill to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Management while it is likely to be tabled in the Parliament soon.

The latest records on road accidents show that 50% of the road accidents and death counts have occurred on motorbike and pillion riders. In the last 10 months, there has been a death count of 211 people in bike and scooter accidents while pillion riders are highly observed to suffer more damage.

Only around the Kathmandu valley, a total of 779 people lost their lives on road accidents in the past five years. Therefore, this being a burning issue, for the safety of riders, the government has made the decision of making helmets compulsory for pillion riders which is quite a good step. However, the general public has not quite agreed with the decision and forcing the traffic department to abrogate it.

Let’s see how effectively the new road safety rule will be implemented.
