Nepal is experiencing significant growth in the adoption of electric vehicles, with a remarkable 5,107 electric cars, sold within the first six months of the current fiscal year, spanning from Poush to Asar. The data, released by the Department of Transport, reveals that these electric vehicles include cars, jeeps, and vans, ranging from 50 kilowattsto 300 kilowatts.
The statistics further break down electric vehicles into categories based on their power capacity. In the 50-100 kilowatts range, there are 2,970 units, while the 100-200 kilowatts category comprises 970 units. Additionally, the 200-300 kilowatts segment includes 68 electric cars, jeeps, and vans.
During the month of Push alone, a total of 1,421 electric vehicles were sold, showcasing a significant increase compared to the previous month of Mangsir, which saw the import of 899 units. This surge in sales reflects a growing trend in Nepali consumers opting for electric vehicles for their daily commuting needs.
The rise in demand for electric cars can be attributed to the government's decision to keep the tax on low-capacity electric vehicles unchanged. This move has made electric cars more attractive to consumers, increasing imports of electric vehicles with power capacities up to 100 kilowatts.
As the popularity of electric cars continues to grow, it remains to be seen how this trend will shape the future of transportation in Nepal.
