Xiaomi, for the first time in its history, managed to become the number one smartphone brand in the world, surpassing both Apple and Samsung in June 2021. According to Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi had a 17.1% market share in June 2021, followed by Samsung at second place with 15.7%, and Apple at third place with 14.3%.
Xiaomi’s sales grew 26% month on month in June, making it the fastest-growing brand for the month, and has sold close to 800 million smartphones since its first appearance back in 2011. The Chinese OEM still ranks second behind Samsung globally for Q2 2021 in terms of sales.

Analysts believe the decline of Huawei and supply constraints of Samsung to be the major driving factor behind the growth of Xiaomi. The company performed well across Europe, China, and India as smartphone demand in those markets normalized. Also, it was China’s fastest-growing OEM thanks to its Redmi 9, Redmi Note 9, and Redmi K-series phones. According to the reports, Xiaomi was also the biggest beneficiary from the short-term gap left by Samsung’s Galaxy A-series.
Counterpoint believes that the growth of Xiaomi could prove to be temporary once Samsung’s production recovers from Vietnam’s COVID-19 wave, but the gap between the vendors is getting closer than ever.
