Skoda Kodiaq RS: India's Most Hyped SUV Sold Out in Six Minutes Flat

Six minutes. Fifty units. Zero left. The Kodiaq RS didn't just launch in India, it detonated. Skoda Auto India confirmed that the initial allocation of 50 units was fully booked within six minutes of reservations opening on June 22. Arriving via the Completely Built Unit (CBU) import route, the Kodiaq RS is officially priced at INR 66.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

If you're doing the math wondering whether you missed it, you did. But knowing exactly what sold out in those six minutes is worth understanding. This isn't an accident or a marketing stunt. It's the payoff of over two decades of brand loyalty that Skoda has quietly, almost stubbornly, built around its RS lineup in India.

Design

The Kodiaq RS doesn't reinvent the standard Kodiaq's silhouette, but it doesn't need to. The front gets a slightly more aggressive bumper and a blacked-out grille with an illuminated DRL line. The headlights carry a slit design with LED DRLs in both clusters.

The sides are where the RS identity really lands. Gloss black exterior elements cover the front grille, roof rails, window surrounds, ORVMs, and the D-pillar, that blacked-out D-pillar in particular gives the car a more athletic, elongated profile when viewed from the side. The 20-inch alloy wheels carry a petal-like design with red brake callipers, which are hard to miss and unambiguously signal what this car is about.

At the rear, a revised bumper houses dual exhaust outlets exclusive to the RS, and all badges including the vRS identifier front and rear are finished in black. Buyers can choose from four colour options: Velvet Red, Magic Black, Moon White, and Steel Grey. The Velvet Red is the one that turns heads most readily.

Interior

Inside, Skoda has gone full RS. The cabin features an all-black theme with red design inserts and prominent red contrast stitching throughout. A 3-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel with red stitching and an RS badge anchors the driver-focused layout, while the dashboard, door inserts, and centre armrest are finished in black artificial leather.

Two interior Design Selection options are available. The RS Lounge features seats in perforated suede, while the RS Suite steps up to full leather with ventilated front seats. The cabin is equipped with a 13-inch central infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, tri-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats with memory function, and a 14-speaker Canton premium audio system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with wireless charging, come as standard.

Despite the performance focus, this is still a seven-seat SUV. The second and third rows retain their practical, family-oriented layout,  which is exactly the point of the Kodiaq RS. It is not a weekend track toy. It is a daily driver that happens to be the quickest Skoda ever sold in India.

Engine and Performance

At the heart of the Kodiaq RS is Volkswagen Group's EA888 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, producing 265 hp and 400 Nm of torque, an increase of 61 hp and 80 Nm over the standard Kodiaq. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) transmission.

Skoda claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.3 seconds, making it the quickest Skoda model ever launched in India. Top speed is rated at 231 km/h.

That 0-100 time deserves context. It is more than a second quicker than the standard Kodiaq 140TSI,  pulled off in an SUV body that weighs considerably more. The engine is the same unit that powers the Octavia RS, and it delivers its numbers here without feeling like it's working against the car's size.

Chassis and Ride

This is where the RS earns its badge beyond the aesthetics. The car features Dynamic Chassis Control Plus (DCC Plus) adaptive suspension with 15 selectable damping settings, along with progressive steering that varies the steering ratio depending on input,  improving both high-speed stability and low-speed manoeuvrability.

Driving mode options include Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, Individual, Snow, and an Off-Road mode exclusive to the RS variant, seven in total.

The braking system gets a meaningful upgrade over the standard car. The front axle receives slotted brake discs with more potent two-pot calipers, finished in the signature red. Rear axles on both the 5-seat and 7-seat variants are fitted with ventilated disc brakes sized to match the car's performance output.

One honest caveat worth flagging: the suspension setup runs firm, and sharp potholes are felt more due to the large low-profile tyres. In Sport mode through city traffic, that's a trade-off you'll notice. Switch to Comfort mode and it becomes liveable, and for most buyers at this price point, that's the right balance.

Safety and Technology Features

The Kodiaq RS is equipped with Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) as standard, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, driver attention monitor, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system. Nine airbags are fitted across the cabin.

The Dynamic Sound Boost system amplifies the engine note inside the cabin for those who want the exhaust note to match the performance figures. Laminated acoustic glass on the side windows keeps the cabin notably quieter when you don't need the theatre.

Price: What INR. 66.99 Lakh Gets You

The Kodiaq RS carries a premium of INR. 20 lakh over the locally assembled top-spec Selection L&K variant,  the CBU import duty in full effect. Its closest platform sibling, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line, is locally assembled and priced at INR. 46.99 lakh, significantly less, but with a less powerful engine tune and without the DCC Plus adaptive damping system.

Skoda has not confirmed whether additional units will be made available beyond the initial 50. That ambiguity is either a genuine supply constraint or very deliberate brand management. Either way, the six-minute sellout has already done more for the RS badge's reputation in India than any marketing campaign could.

Whether a second batch arrives or not, the Kodiaq RS has made one thing clear: there is a real, paying audience in India for a performance SUV that doesn't carry a German luxury marque's badge. Skoda spent over two decades building RS credibility in this market,  and buyers collected it in six minutes flat.

Conclusion

Fifty units is a deliberately small number. Whether that's a supply constraint or a calculated scarcity play, the effect is the same, it created a frenzy. Skoda knows exactly what it has with the RS badge in India, and it's using that equity carefully.

The real question now is what comes next. Will Skoda bring more Kodiaq RS units to meet demand, or will this remain an exclusive, appointment-only kind of car? Given the six-minute sellout, the pressure to import a second batch must be significant. How Skoda manages that demand, whether it scales up or keeps the RS deliberately rare, will define what the badge is worth in the next chapter.
