Apple has announced that starting from early 2022, customers will get access to Apple’s genuine parts and tools to perform their own repairs. The program is dubbed Self Service Repair. Under this, customers who are comfortable with completing their repairs will get parts, tools, and manuals through Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) and Independent Repair Providers.
“In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.” - Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.

The repair program will be available in the US in early 2022 and will expand to additional countries throughout the year. Costumers will first get resources to repair iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups, with M1-based Macs eligible soon afterward.
According to Apple, the initial phase of the program will focus on display, battery, and camera, with additional repairs being available later next year.

This is a huge shift in Apple’s policy, as the tech giants have never been friendly to third-party repairs. Apple products use special screws and adhesives, and most of the parts are soldered onto the logic board, making it hard for normal people to repair. The tech giant has also been resistant to the right-to-repair movement and from any repairs happening outside of its own stores.
Apple has not disclosed why the company became so open to third-party repair. However, many reports believe this is because of government pressure. The White House, the Federal Trade Commission, and multiple states in the US backing the right-to-repair movement could have forced Apple to allow customer maintenance.
