iPhone 14 Pro's A16 Bionic Chipset: Fastest Ever Chipset on a Smartphone

Introduction

Along with the iPhone 14 Pro series, Apple's new A16 Bionic chip also made its debut. This new chip is claimed to be the world’s fastest chip on a smartphone. Besides, Apple has only used its latest A16 Bionic on the Pro models of the iPhone 14 Series - iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

In this post, we’ll talk about the A16 Bionic specifications and benchmark scores. So, without any further ado, let’s get started.

Apple A16 Bionic Specifications

Apple A16 Bionic is the successor of last year’s A15 Bionic chip. It was unveiled alongside the iPhone 14 series, and this year only the Pro models of the iPhone lineup see the upgraded A16 chip.

  • The Apple A16 Bionic uses TSMC’s N4 node, which is an improved version of the N5 node that powers the A15 Bionic.
  • For speed and efficiency, the A16 features 16 billion transistors. It features a billion more transistors than the A15 Bionic (15 billion transistors)
  • It features a five-core GPU with 50% more memory bandwidth than A15 Bionic.
  • The A16 Bionic packs a 16-core neural engine that can perform nearly 17 trillion operations per second, allowing pixel-by-pixel analysis to optimize photos.
  • As per Apple, the A16 features an advanced ISP that powers the creative flexibility of the quad‑pixel sensor.
  • The A16 Bionic is very power-efficient. It is claimed to consume 30% lesser power than the A15 Bionic chip.
  • The leaked Geekbench score of A16 Bionic shows a single-core score of 1879 and a multi-core score of 4664.

Moreover, the full breakdown of Apple A16 Bionic specifications is in the table below:

Model A16 Bionic
Node 4nm TSMC process
CPU Cores  6
GPU Cores  5
Neural Engine  16-core (17 trillion TOPS)
ISP  Apple-designed ISP (up to 4 trillion TOPS)
Connectivity 5G, 4G LTE Cat. 18

Conclusion

Apple A16 Bionic is the latest chip claimed to be the world’s fastest chip on a smartphone. It will be interesting to see how the chip competes against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor that uses the same TSMC process.

Here, we’ve mentioned the  A16 Bionic specifications and benchmark scores. I hope you found the article helpful.
