With the Surface Studio 2+, Microsoft is bringing its desktop all-in-one back from the grave (Plus). We had anticipated this to be known as the Surface Studio 3 prior to introduction, however it appears that Microsoft may not view this as a significant enough upgrade to warrant moving up one number.
Overview
Despite this, the Surface Studio 2 Plus has had time to make a number of improvements since the last model, and performance will be significantly improved with this new one. However, little has changed on the outside, so whether it's worthwhile for you relies completely on how much you value the improved performance and form factor. Let's look more closely.
An increase in specification
In terms of specs, the Surface Studio 2+ significantly outperforms its predecessor. In the world of technology, four years is a long time since the last model was introduced. Therefore, the Surface Studio 2+ upgrades to an Intel Core i7-11370H, whereas the Surface Studio 2 shipped with a seventh-generation Intel Core i7-7820HQ. We're getting a 35W processor instead of the Surface Studio 2's 45W chip, which is an interesting reduction in terms of TDP.
Thunderbolt 4 assistance
Since the release of the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop Studio in 2021, Microsoft has gradually included Thunderbolt 4 capability to their products. Thunderbolt 4 is now one of the major updates on the Surface Studio 2+ as well. Now that Thunderbolt 4 is supported by all three of the USB Type-C ports on the device's back, you can connect high-resolution external displays that take use of Thunderbolt, with support for up to three 4K monitors at 60Hz in each port.
Release Date
On October 12, 2022, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Studio 2+ at their Surface event, along with the Surface Pro 9 and Surface Laptop 5. The next day, pre-orders for the device opened. It should be available at the Microsoft Store in addition to the typical electronics merchants.
