What is the New Emergency SOS via Satellite Service on iPhone? Full Detail Here

Introduction

With the iPhone 14 Series, Apple introduced the new Emergency SOS via satellite service. Now, the new iPhone 14 models are capable of connecting to satellites for emergency services.

In this post, we’ll explain in detail the new Emergency SOS via Satellite Service of iPhone 14. We’ll also discuss its availability and try to explain how to use Emergency SOS via Satellite. So, let’s get started.

What is Emergency SOS via Satellite Service?

Emergency SOS via Satellite Service is a new feature on Apple’s latest iPhone 14 series that lets you connect to a satellite in an emergency circumstance. It allows you to call or text emergency services when you are out of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage range by trying to connect your iPhone to a satellite.

How to Use Emergency SOS via Satellite?

To use the Emergency SOS via Satellite service, you first have to be in a place with no cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Then, to connect to a satellite, you have to follow these steps:

  • Hold your phone naturally in your hand. Don’t put it in a pocket or backpack.
  • Find a place outside with a clear view of the sky and the horizon.
  • Be in a place with clear space cause dense trees, hills, mountains, canyons, and tall structures can block the connection.
  • Follow the screen instructions to move left or right so you can avoid a blocked signal.
  • When connected to the satellite, you can maintain connection even when the phone screen is locked.

After connecting to a Satellite, you can follow these steps to contact an emergency service:

  • First, try calling emergency services. Even if a cellular network isn't available, you might be able to make the call.
  • If call emergency services fail, you can text emergency services by tapping Emergency Text via Satellite.
  • Tap ‘Report Emergency’
  • Answer the emergency questions that show up on the screen to best describe your situation.
  • You can also choose to notify your emergency contacts that you contacted emergency services, along with your location and the nature of your emergency.

Emergency SOS via Satellite Service Availability

To use the Emergency SOS via Satellite, you must have the latest iPhone 14 series with the iOS 16 software update coming in November 2022. Besides, you also should be in a place with no cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.

The new Emergency SOS via Satellite service is only available in the US (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) and Canada. You can use this Emergency SOS service if you visit the US and Canada with your iPhone 14 bought in other regions. However, if you have purchased the phone from China mainland, Hong Kong, or Macao, then the Emergency SOS via satellite feature won't work.

According to Apple, the Emergency SOS via satellite might not work in places above 62° latitude.
