Samsung leads the global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2021

Samsung is the leading smartphone brand as we near the end of the first quarter of 2021. According to the reports coming out from Strategy Analytics Samsung has a 23% of the global smartphone market share and a 32% year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2021. Samsung shipped 77 million units of smartphones globally just in the first quarter of the year. The reports credit the performance of the Galaxy S21 series and 5G models of Galaxy A series as the driving factors behind the success of Samsung. The tech giant Apple is on the second spot with 17% of the market share and a 44% year-on-year growth shipping 57 million units of iPhones in the first quarter.

The Chinese tech giant Xiaomi also enjoyed an impressive first quarter of 2021, the company reported 80% year-on-year growth and covered 15% of the global smartphone market share. Both Oppo and Vivo had a market share of 11% and rounded out the top five list. Oppo saw a 68% year-on-year growth whereas Vivo saw an 85% year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2021.

The trade ban on Huawei seems to have affected the company drastically as the Chinese tech company fell out of the top five considering that Huawei was on the number two spot in the first quarter of 2020.

The first quarter of 2021 seems to be eventful for smartphone makers as the Q1 of 2020 was majorly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Q1 of 2021 saw the shipment of 340 million units of smartphones compared to 275 million units in Q1 of 2020. Also, the global smartphone shipment saw a 24% year-on-year growth in the Q1 of 2021.

With Apple’s iPhone 13 yet to be launched later this year it will be interesting to see if Samsung could hold on to the number one spot.
