The government has put forward four new criteria for setting up a motorcycle assembling industry. The Department of Industry under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies brought the new standards on Monday.

According to the department, such industries need to increase their domestic value by at least 10 percent in the first year and at least 30 percent at the end of five years. The second criterion states that at least 50 direct employees should be employed in the first year and at least 200 direct employees in five years.

The third standard set by the department states that the motorcycle industry must use at least 10 percent of household items within five years. In the fourth criterion, a committee comprising concerned bodies such as the Department of Environment, Department of Transport Management, Department of Industry, etc. will conduct tests on environment and safety.

The department has implemented such criteria in the case of industries to be set up on the basis of CKD (Completely Knocked Down).

The replacement bill introduced by the government some time ago had taken the policy of encouraging the assembly industry in the country and directly banning the import of motorcycles. Accordingly, the department seems to have brought this new standard.

Bajaj and TVS motorcycles are being assembled in Nepal. Similarly, motorcycles of companies like Yamaha, Honda, and Suzuki are also being prepared to be assembled in Nepal.

Excitingly, this step will further decrease the price of automobiles in Nepal as well.
