Introduction

As you may know, Nepal Telecom has been working on 5G for a long time now. In fact, the teleco planned to start 5G in Nepal on January 1, 2023. However, NTC has now postponed the 5G trial due to lack of sufficient 5G supporting phones in Nepal.

So in this post, we’ll discuss Nepal Telecom's (NTC) plans for 5G trials in Nepal. We’ll also talk about all the preparation NTC has done to perform the 5G tests in the country. So, without any delay, let’s get started.

Nepal Telecom’s Preparation For 5G Trials in Nepal

If we recall, Nepal Telecom (NTC) first submitted 5G trials work plan to Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) on June 2021. On November 2021, NTC secured approval for 5G from NTA on 60Mhz frequency bandwidth in its preferred 2600MHz band.

Now, in November 2022, Almost a year after receiving the approval, Nepal Telecom has already imported and installed 5G equipment in four locations across the country. According to NTC, the installation process of 5G equipment took longer than expected.

5G Trials to Start in all 7 Provinces?

Now that all the preparations for 5G trials are done, NTC is finally preparing to start 5G tests in four Provinces in Nepal. First, the trial will begin in Kathmandu then the test will start in other provinces.

In recent news, there’s a report that The Ministry of Communication, Information, and Technology (MoCIT) has directed NTC to conduct trials in all seven provinces. So, Nepal Telecom is likely to install 5G equipment in the remaining three provinces and start 5G tests soon.

For now, NTC will conduct the 5G trials on Non-Standalone (NSA) architecture. In simple words, the 5G network will be built on top of an existing 4G. However, NTC has future plans for Standalone architecture (SA) with dedicated 5G core infrastructure.

NTC Postpones 5G Trial For Now

At first, the 5G trial in Nepal was pushed to January 1, 2023 as Nepal Telecom was unable to start the trail after Tihar due to the general election of November. Now, the teleco further postpones its 5G operations because of few mobile phones supporting 5G at 2600 MHz frequency available in the Nepalese market.

Speaking about the matter, Shobhan Adhikari, a spokesperson for the NTC states, “We found that only a small number of mobile sets operate 5G in 2600 MHz frequency in the local market.” Adhikari further adds, “Firstly, we will try to identify the number of mobile sets and other devices supporting 5G in the frequency allocated and move ahead with the trial.” So, in the latest developments, Nepal Telecom will likely start 5G trails in Nepal after 2-3 weeks.

Conclusion

For now, Nepal Telecom postpones 5G trails in Nepal due to lack of sufficient 5G supporting phones in the country. However, once the teleco completes its study, they will resume 5G trials in Nepal with access to the 2600MHz band for free for a year. Soon we’ll have 5G in Nepal, which is the 5th generation of wireless cellular connectivity that is extremely fast compared to previous Gen 3G and 4G cellular networks.

To compare, 5G has the potential to be 100 times fast than 4G, reaching speeds of 20Gbps. It supports wider bandwidth like sub-6GHz and mmWave and has a latency of 1ms.
