After the recent accident of journalist Gobinda Sharma and pillion rider Chandramani Mudbari at Dhobighat, Lalitpur, the Metropolitan Traffic Police had initiated a campaign at the Koteshwor-Kalanki Ring Road by using a laser speed gun to minimize the speed to vehicle and control over-speeding by riders.
This new initiative by MTP was first started on June 11 where lots of riders were found to over-speed their vehicles even where the speed limits are given. According to the new rule implemented, a vehicle cannot exceed its speed of 50 Km/hr in the main lane and 20 km/hr in the service lane.

While after 5 days of the speed control rule being implemented, a total of 492 riders have been caught in the act of over-speeding their vehicles. Most of these riders are found to be motorcycle riders. According to the rule, an action is taken to these disobedient riders in accordance with section 164 (6) of the Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2049. A fine of Rs 500 has been imposed to all the riders who were caught disobeying the rule.
Initially, three laser speed guns have been used to track the speed of the vehicles. The laser speed gun is said to track a vehicle up to 150 meters distance.

<h2>The working mechanism of Laser speed guns</h2>

A laser speed gun moves faster than sound (about 984,000,000 feet per second) or roughly 1 foot (30 cm) per nanosecond and measures the round-trip time for light to reach a vehicle and reflect back. It shoots an extremely short burst of infrared laser light, which then waits for it to reflect off the vehicle. The laser speed gun then counts the number of nanoseconds it takes for the round trip. It then divides by 2 and calculates the distance to the vehicle. The accuracy can be very high. The cone of the distance, which is 3 feet in diameter, and allows the gun to target a specific vehicle.

Well, this is, in fact, a great initiative by the Traffic Police department in minimizing the high pace of accidents constantly increasing mainly in Kathmandu roads. We hope that this new road safety rule gets strictly implemented while riders can also be fully aware while riding their vehicles.
